Workshop Description
Solar Grazing: Principles, Practices, and Partnerships (October 20-22, 2025)
Our Solar Grazing Workshop offers an innovative approach to sustainable land use by combining renewable energy production with responsible livestock management. This unique, three-day experience provides a deep dive into the principles and real-world application of solar grazing, led by experts from White Oak Pastures alongside solar site owners and managers.
Participants will explore every aspect of solar grazing—from guided site tours to contract negotiation—and gain valuable insight into how this practice can be successfully integrated into diverse farm operations.
What’s Included in the Three-Day Experience:
- Field visits to two solar farms with different designs, highlighting the challenges and benefits of each layout
- Rotational grazing demonstration with the White Oak Pastures sheep herd
- Detailed breakdown of capital expenditures and infrastructure needs, with pros and cons of various equipment types
- Panel discussions featuring regenerative ag leaders, solar facility operators, and experienced solar grazers
- Insights into bidding, contracting, and execution of solar grazing agreements
- Historical overview of regenerative agriculture implementation at White Oak Pastures
- Fundamental soil health principles, including applications in grazing systems
- Strategies for protecting sensitive solar infrastructure from livestock
- Side-by-side comparison of previously grazed vs. ungrazed paddocks
- Site logistics: animal delivery, handling, and infrastructure (portable handling equipment, ramps/chutes, turnaround space)
- Demonstration of watering systems and equipment used on solar grazing sites
- Defining grazing goals: forage quality, soil improvement, and forage height in relation to panel clearance
- What solar site managers look for in a grazing vendor: key characteristics and expectations
- Stocking rate management: how seasonality, precipitation, and forage type influence numbers, and the frequency and intensity of necessary adjustments over time
- Animal selection for solar grazing: best classes for performance (e.g., dry ewes, weaned lambs)
- Ample Q&A sessions to ensure participant questions are addressed throughout the workshop
